Chasing the Aurora: An Honest Guide

Forecasts, cloud maps and patience. What actually raises your chances of seeing the northern lights.

Green northern lights reflected in a still lake under snowy mountains

Clouds matter more than the KP index

A strong forecast means nothing under thick cloud. We watch the cloud cover map first and drive towards the gaps.

Dark, quiet, patient

Leave the city lights, give your eyes twenty minutes to adjust and dress for standing still, not walking. The aurora often starts as a pale grey arc that only turns green on camera.

Our honest odds

On a 6-night winter trip, our guests have seen the aurora on at least one night 9 times out of 10.
