Iceland for the First Time: What to Know Before Going

From midnight sun to the Ring Road, here’s what we tell every guest before they land.

Seasons decide everything

Iceland in June and Iceland in January are two different countries. Summer gives you 21 hours of light and open highland roads; winter gives you aurora, ice caves and four hours of soft daylight. Pick the season first, the route second.

Distances are longer than they look

The Ring Road is 1,322 km, and the weather decides your speed. We plan days with no more than three hours of driving, so there is time to stop when the light is good.

One rule we always repeat

Never turn your back on the ocean at Reynisfjara. The sneaker waves are real.
